Why family medicine

I get to stay for the whole story.

For more than 20 years I have cared for people as they grow up, grow older, get sick, and get well. Some of my patients come as a family. Others come on their own, and years later we have a lot of history together.

I like seeing people when they are well, and I like working out a new problem. I want to know what worked and what didn’t, and what happened after the specialist visit. I like it when a teenager starts talking to me because they need another trusted adult, and when their parent trusts that I have everyone’s back.

I am grateful to be there when someone gets a serious diagnosis, and I love being there when a baby is born.

Working with me

Family medicine for children, teens, and adults.

I am a family physician. I care for children, teenagers, and adults, including older adults, and sometimes several generations of one family. Think of me as your primary care doctor, family doctor, or general physician.

I keep a smaller practice so I have time for you and am easy to reach. We are accepting new patients, and joining starts with a conversation, so we can both see whether it is a good fit. Your first visit is 90 minutes, and after that visits are as long as you need. Visits are in person in Noe Valley or by video.

When it gets serious

I stay with you when things get hard.

Sooner or later, most people get news they were not expecting: a cancer diagnosis, a heart problem, a frightening result for a parent or a child. Over more than 20 years, I have been the doctor people call at those moments, and I take that seriously.

Making sense of it.

I explain what is happening in plain language, what the choices are, and what questions are worth asking. You should not have to decode a diagnosis on your own.

Keeping the team connected.

When several specialists are involved, I stay in touch with them, keep track of the whole plan, and make sure the medications, tests, and decisions fit together. I use Epic, so I can bring in your records from the medical centers you have been to and see the whole picture in one place.

Staying through the long part.

Serious illness is rarely one visit. I stay involved through treatment and afterward, and I help you and your family think through what matters most to you.

I will be honest about what we know and what we don’t, and I will keep showing up. I am part of your health care team, often the one who keeps all the pieces connected, and when treatment gets complex, I help guide it.

Who I am

What I bring to the exam room.

I came to medicine by an indirect route, and all of it comes with me.

I know the balancing act.

I had my first child before medical school, my second during it, and my third while running a busy practice. My kids are grown, and I’m settled in San Francisco for the long haul.

There is no textbook family.

My grandparents, Jeanne and Jules Manford, started PFLAG, and growing up around their work taught me that activism is part of life. It also taught me that families come in every shape.

I meet people where they are.

A lot of life experience, and some unusual detours, taught me to pay attention to whoever is in front of me and meet them where they are, even if they are nervous about doctors.
